Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation (EC&I) Design Engineer (Contract)
Location: Remote - United States
Contract Type: Long-term Contract (Approx. 9-12 Months)
Reporting To: Engineering Manager
About the Opportunity
An established engineering consultancy delivering complex industrial process facility projects is seeking an experienced Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation (EC&I) Design Engineer to join its engineering team on a contract basis.
Working remotely within the United States, you will support the design and development of a major industrial process facility, producing detailed electrical and instrumentation designs while ensuring compliance with applicable US codes and standards. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with a strong background in chemical, petrochemical, energy or other process manufacturing environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce detailed EC&I engineering designs for industrial process facilities.
- Develop electrical power distribution and instrumentation designs in accordance with US regulations and industry standards.
- Prepare engineering documentation including:
- Single Line Diagrams (SLDs)
- Block Cable Diagrams (BCDs)
- Schematics
- General Arrangement Drawings (GAs)
- Scope of Work documentation
- Technical Specifications
- Interconnection Drawings
- Instrument Loop Drawings
- Intrinsic Safety (IS) Calculations
- Design Support Documents (DSDs)
- Assist with the design of control and instrumentation systems for process manufacturing applications.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout the design lifecycle.
- Ensure all engineering deliverables comply with relevant US electrical and safety standards.
Required Experience
- Strong background in Electrical, Controls & Instrumentation design within industrial process environments.
- Experience within chemical, petrochemical, refining, industrial manufacturing or similar process industries.
- Good understanding of control and instrumentation systems.
- Working knowledge of NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) and other applicable US electrical standards.
- Experience producing detailed engineering design documentation.
- Associate Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline (or equivalent experience).
Preferred Experience
Experience with one or more of the following is highly desirable:
- Hazardous Area Classification and Design
- NFPA 70E
- NFPA 499
- NFPA 652
- NEC Class II requirements
- ISA / IECEx standards
- ETAP (or equivalent cable sizing software)
- Dialux or Relux lighting design software
- Lightning protection system design
- AutoCAD / AutoCAD LT
- High Voltage power distribution systems
- Earthing and grounding system design
Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will be a self-motivated engineer who can work independently within a remote engineering team while delivering high-quality technical documentation. You will have a practical understanding of industrial electrical systems, instrumentation, hazardous area design and US engineering standards, together with strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary project teams.
