Senior Structural Engineer

Senior Civil/Structural Engineer

Location: Birmingham, Alabama
Employment type: Permanent, full-time
Experience: Five or more years
Compensation: Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits

The Opportunity

We are partnering with a leading international engineering, design and advisory consultancy to recruit a Civil/Structural Engineer for its Birmingham office.

The company delivers multidisciplinary engineering services to clients across complex process and manufacturing industries, including pulp and paper, chemicals, food and beverage, mining and metals, and biorefining. Its US engineers work closely with technical specialists across an extensive international network, providing support throughout the project lifecycle-from feasibility studies and front-end planning through detailed engineering, construction and commissioning.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced structural engineer who is ready to take greater ownership of projects, lead engineers and designers, and work directly with industrial clients.

The Role

As a Civil/Structural Engineer, you will be responsible for the analysis and design of new structures, upgrades to existing facilities, and structural investigations for industrial and commercial projects.

Working as part of multidisciplinary project teams, you will lead the structural scope on smaller assignments and take significant responsibility for larger projects. You will guide engineers and designers, make technical recommendations and oversee the quality of calculations, drawings, specifications and reports.

The role combines hands-on engineering with project leadership and client interaction, making it well suited to someone who wants to continue developing technically while progressing towards a broader discipline-lead position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the structural engineering scope for small and medium-sized projects, with limited supervision.
  • Support larger, multidisciplinary projects through conceptual design, feasibility studies, detailed engineering and construction.
  • Coordinate the work of structural engineers and designers, ensuring that deliverables meet project quality, budget and schedule requirements.
  • Establish structural design approaches, scopes of work, budgets and project execution plans.
  • Design structural systems and components for industrial and commercial facilities.
  • Perform structural analysis and design using steel, reinforced concrete and timber.
  • Develop and review calculations, construction drawings, specifications, technical reports and engineering studies.
  • Assess and design modifications, repairs and upgrades to existing structures.
  • Conduct site investigations, collect field data and evaluate existing structural conditions.
  • Visit active project sites to monitor construction progress and respond to technical queries.
  • Work closely with civil, mechanical, process, electrical, architectural and other engineering disciplines.
  • Meet with clients to understand project requirements, discuss design concepts and provide practical technical recommendations.
  • Help ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget and in line with client expectations.
  • Support proposals and business-development activities by preparing scopes, technical content and summaries of relevant project experience.
  • Mentor less-experienced engineers and designers and contribute to the technical development of the wider team.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with existing and prospective clients.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a closely related discipline.
  • At least five years of professional structural engineering experience.
  • Experience designing structures for industrial, manufacturing or commercial facilities.
  • Strong knowledge of structural steel and reinforced concrete design.
  • Familiarity with timber design would be beneficial.
  • Working knowledge of relevant US codes and standards, including IBC, ASCE 7, ACI and AISC.
  • Experience producing and reviewing structural calculations, drawings, specifications and technical reports.
  • Ability to manage priorities across multiple projects and work effectively within agreed budgets and schedules.
  • Strong analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail and the ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Confidence working directly with clients and collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • Willingness to visit industrial and construction sites when required.

Professional Registration

A Professional Engineer licence is preferred. Candidates who are actively progressing towards licensure and can obtain their PE within approximately one year of joining will also be considered.

Preferred Software Experience

Experience with some of the following would be advantageous:

  • RISA-3D
  • Revit
  • AutoCAD
  • BIM platforms and workflows
  • Navisworks
  • Bluebeam
  • Microsoft Office

Candidates with experience using comparable structural analysis and design software are also encouraged to apply.

What the Company Offers

  • The opportunity to work on technically varied and challenging industrial projects.
  • Exposure to the complete engineering lifecycle, from early studies through construction support.
  • Collaboration with engineers and technical specialists from multiple disciplines and international offices.
  • A visible role with genuine scope for increased project and discipline leadership.
  • Support for continued technical and professional development.
  • A collaborative environment in which engineers are encouraged to share knowledge and mentor others.
  • Competitive, performance-oriented compensation.
  • A comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, paid vacation and holidays, and a 401(k) with company match.

Personal Qualities

The successful candidate is likely to demonstrate:

  • A strong work ethic and commitment to technical quality.
  • Sound engineering judgement.
  • Adaptability and practical problem-solving ability.
  • Leadership potential and a willingness to take ownership.
  • A collaborative, team-oriented approach.
